The sensor's resistance varies with coolant temperature and is read by the engine management system to correct fuelling and cooling fan operation, and to drive the instrument-pack temperature gauge. Specified for the 2.5L 6-cylinder diesel engine.

An intermittent or drifting sensor commonly shows up as erratic temperature gauge readings or poor cold-start behaviour.
