What does the STC3138 front shock absorber cover?
STC3138 is the front shock absorber for the left hand side only, made by Bilstein. It damps the front suspension on the Defender 1986 to 2006, Discovery 1 1989 to 1998 and Range Rover Classic 1970 to 1994, controlling how fast the axle moves after the coil spring compresses.
Do I need two of these for the front axle?
No. STC3138 is the left hand side only, so the right hand damper is a separate part number. Shock absorbers should still be replaced in axle pairs so damping is matched left to right. Fitting one new and leaving one worn typically gives uneven body control.
Which side is the left hand front damper?
Left hand is taken from the driver's seat looking forward, so on a right hand drive Defender or Discovery 1 the left hand front damper sits on the passenger side. STC3138 is that side only, so confirm which side you are ordering before checkout.
How do I know the front dampers need replacing?
Worn front dampers typically show as float or wallow after a bump, a nose dive under braking, or the front end pattering over rough surfaces. Oil weeping down the damper body is another sign. On a Defender or Discovery 1 it is most obvious at motorway speed.
