Retainer Clip for the pin of a rotating towing pintle, part of the towing hitch assembly.

The clip passes through the drilling in the pintle pin and locks it in position, so the pin cannot work upward out of the pintle jaw under towing load or vibration once a towing eye is coupled. It is a consumable item and should be renewed whenever it has lost spring tension, is distorted, or shows wear at the bearing faces.

The clip is the only mechanical retention on the pin, so its condition should be checked as part of any towing hitch inspection.
