Non-Return Valve - Brake Vacuum - the one-way valve in the vacuum line between the engine and the brake servo, part of the master cylinder and servo assembly.

The valve lets air be drawn out of the servo chamber while the engine is running and seals against reverse flow the moment vacuum falls away, so a vacuum reserve is held in the servo. That reserve is what provides assisted braking for a number of pedal applications after the engine stops. A valve that leaks or sticks open shows up as a hard brake pedal, inconsistent servo assistance, or an audible hiss from the bulkhead area.

The valve is directional and must be fitted the correct way round. Renew the sealing grommet in the servo body at the same time if it has hardened or perished, since a poor seal there produces the same symptoms as a failed valve.

Frequently asked questions

What does the brake vacuum non-return valve do?
The brake vacuum non-return valve holds vacuum in the brake servo so the booster keeps working. It sits in the vacuum line between the engine and the servo, letting air flow one way only. It fits the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
What are the signs this non-return valve has failed?
A failed brake vacuum non-return valve usually shows as a hard brake pedal and loss of servo assistance, since the servo can't hold vacuum. On the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic it's a cheap part to rule out when the pedal feels heavy.
Does this fit my Range Rover Classic?
This valve fits the Range Rover Classic from 1986 to 1994, alongside the Discovery 1 (1989-1998). Classic fitment runs VIN DA301158 to HA610293 for 1986-1991 cars and from JA610294 for 1992-1994 cars. Check your VIN against these breaks before ordering.
Is fitting the non-return valve a DIY job?
Fitting the brake vacuum non-return valve is typically straightforward, it pushes into the vacuum hose line. Note the direction of flow when fitting, since it only works one way. Afterward check the pedal for firm servo assistance on the Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic.
