Front Axle Case and Differential Assembly - the front differential supplied complete and built up in its axle case.
The assembly houses the crownwheel and pinion and the differential gear set. It takes drive from the front propshaft at the pinion input flange, turns it through 90 degrees and divides it between the left- and right-hand front driveshafts, allowing the front wheels to rotate at different speeds. The case carries the pinion input seal and the driveshaft output seals.
Replacing the complete assembly is the usual remedy where the pinion or differential bearings have failed, where the gear set is chipped or has stripped teeth, or where the case itself is cracked or distorted. A built-up unit also removes the need to set pinion bearing preload and crownwheel backlash on the vehicle.
