Monotube Shock Absorber - Rear - Standard Travel is a high-pressure gas damper for the rear axle damping assembly, built to standard closed and extended lengths for vehicles running at standard ride height.

A floating piston separates the high-pressure nitrogen charge from the suspension fluid, which eliminates aeration and the damping fade that follows sustained heavy use. The 46 mm sintered, Teflon-coated piston works inside a 52 mm thick-wall monotube body, giving a large area under pressure for precise damping control, while the 16 mm induction-hardened hard chrome shaft runs in high-performance oil and dust seals behind an HDPE dust shield. OE-style bushes and mountings are used throughout, so fitting and later servicing follow standard practice.

Specification: standard travel, 565 mm open length, 364 mm closed length, 16 mm shaft diameter, 46 mm piston diameter, 52 mm body diameter.

Serviceable parts: bush kit TFSBK02 (upper), with TFSBK01 (lower) for the early mounting without cups or TFSBK03 (lower) for the late mounting with cups. Top mounting hardware is RYF500210 inner washer and RYF500220 outer washer - both fitted curved face towards the bush - secured with the RYH500510 M12 nyloc retaining nut.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard-travel monotube rear shock absorber?
The standard-travel monotube rear shock absorber is a high-pressure gas damper for the rear axle, built to standard lengths for vehicles at standard ride height. A floating piston separates the nitrogen charge from the fluid, eliminating aeration and damping fade.
Is this for the rear, and does it suit standard height?
Yes, this monotube shock is for the rear axle position and is built to standard travel for standard ride height. Choose a +2in or +5in shock instead if your suspension is lifted.
What are the signs this rear shock is worn?
A worn rear monotube shock typically shows as a bouncing rear end, poor load control and the back stepping out over bumps. Oil weeping down the shock body is a common sign the damper has lost its gas charge.
Which vehicles does this rear shock fit?
This standard-travel monotube rear shock fits the Defender (1986-2006 and 2007-2016), Discovery 1 (1989-1998) and Range Rover Classic (1970-1994) at standard ride height, across all engine variants.
