The pin passes through the receiver box section and the inserted male 2" square section, locking the attachment - drop plate, recovery point or demountable winch cradle - against pull-out under towing and recovery loads. It is the service replacement for the pin originally supplied with the assembly, and is the item most often lost or damaged in use, since it is removed and refitted every time an attachment is changed.
