Inlet Valve Stem Seal for the cylinder head valve train on the V8 petrol engine.
The seal fits over the inlet valve guide and wipes the valve stem as it reciprocates, metering the small quantity of oil needed at the stem-to-guide interface while preventing the remainder being drawn down into the inlet port by manifold depression. Because the inlet tract runs under vacuum, inlet seals are worked harder than their exhaust counterparts and are usually the first to harden or split.
Worn stem seals are a common cause of blue smoke on start-up and on the overrun, and of oil consumption with compression still within specification. Stem seals should be renewed as a complete set whenever the cylinder heads are removed.
