Clutch Release Bearing - sealed ball bearing carried on the gearbox front cover sleeve, forming the link between the clutch release fork and the pressure plate diaphragm fingers.

When the clutch pedal is pressed the release fork pushes the bearing along the sleeve onto the rotating diaphragm spring, lifting the pressure plate and interrupting the drive. The bearing allows the stationary fork to act on the spinning cover assembly. A failing bearing rumbles or squeals as the pedal is depressed and can eventually seize, damaging the diaphragm fingers.

R380 five-speed manual gearbox applications. Normally renewed whenever the clutch assembly is removed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UTJ100210 clutch release bearing?
The UTJ100210 is the clutch release (thrust) bearing for the Defender (1987-2006) with the 5-speed manual gearbox. It presses the clutch diaphragm when you push the pedal, disengaging drive. Fits 2.5 NA diesel, 300Tdi and 2.5 petrol variants.
What are the signs of a worn clutch release bearing?
A worn release bearing typically causes a rumbling or grinding noise when the clutch pedal is pressed, which stops when released. On the Defender it's a common cause of clutch noise and should be sorted before it seizes.
Should the release bearing be replaced with the clutch?
Yes, the release bearing is typically replaced as standard whenever the clutch is changed on the Defender, since the gearbox has to come off for both. Fitting a new bearing avoids removing the gearbox again for a cheap part.
