Alternator Clutch Pulley Assembly (overrunning alternator decoupler) for the accessory drive of the 2.4L Duratorq TDCi diesel engine.

The pulley mounts on the alternator rotor shaft and drives the alternator through a one-way clutch. Under the torsional pulses of a diesel engine the alternator rotor tends to run ahead of the belt; the clutch lets the rotor overrun rather than forcing the belt to absorb the speed difference. This reduces belt tension spikes and tensioner movement, quietens the drive and extends belt and tensioner life.

A worn or seized clutch pulley usually shows as squeal or rattle from the accessory drive at idle and on deceleration. Removal and fitting require the correct alternator decoupler tool to engage the internal splined drive.
