Parts for the Land Rover Discovery 1, also known as the Discovery Series I, produced from 1989 to 1998 at Land Rover's Solihull plant. This collection covers all variants built on the Range Rover Classic body-on-frame platform, including 200Tdi diesel (1989 to 1994), 300Tdi diesel (1994 to 1998), 3.5 L Rover V8, 3.9 L Rover V8, and 2.0 Mpi petrol (1993 to 1998). Three-door and five-door estate body styles are covered. Parts for Discovery 2 (1998 to 2004) and later generations are not listed here. If you need parts for a different Discovery generation, the Land Rover Discovery Parts collection provides navigation to all models. Over 2,200 parts are listed for this generation, covering engine, drivetrain, suspension, steering, cooling, body, and chassis.
The Discovery 1 was produced from 1989 to 1998. Parts compatibility on this page is scoped to that generation only.
Engine variant is the most important fitment boundary for Discovery 1 buyers. Early production vehicles (1989 to 1994) used the 2.5 L 200Tdi four-cylinder diesel. From 1994 onward, Land Rover replaced the 200Tdi with the 2.5 L 300Tdi. These two engines share a broadly similar architecture but use different injection equipment, timing components, and gasket sets. Parts are not universally interchangeable between them. Petrol variants used either the 3.5 L or 3.9 L Rover V8 and require a separate set of cooling, ignition, and engine management parts.
All Discovery 1 variants used the LT230 transfer case and a permanent four-wheel-drive drivetrain with a lockable centre differential. The manual gearbox was a five-speed unit. Automatic variants used the four-speed ZF 4HP22 gearbox. Many driveline, chassis, and suspension parts are shared across engine variants, but engine-specific parts must be selected by variant. Where a part is engine-specific, check the product description before ordering.
The Discovery 1 shares a significant number of parts with the Range Rover Classic, particularly in the drivetrain, axles, transfer box, and suspension. If a Discovery 1 part is listed as having Range Rover Classic fitment, this is expected and does not indicate an error.
To confirm the exact specification of your vehicle, use your VIN. The 10th digit of your VIN identifies the model year. Land Rover's official VIN identification guidance is available here.
Part CategoriesThe following categories cover the most active replacement areas for this generation.
Engine parts: Covers 200Tdi, 300Tdi, and Rover V8 variants separately. Key items include timing components, gasket sets, oil filters, thermostats, and ancillary fixings. Ensure parts are selected by engine code and variant year.
Cooling system: Radiator hoses, thermostats, water pumps, and coolant expansion tank components. V8 cooling system maintenance is particularly time-critical given the engine's sensitivity to overheating.
Drivetrain and propshafts: LT230 transfer case parts, propshaft components, differential parts, and drive flanges. Many items overlap with Range Rover Classic fitment.
Suspension and steering: Coil spring suspension across all variants means bushes, shock absorbers, A-frame components, anti-roll bar links, and steering joints are all serviceable. Power steering seal and hose replacements are common.
Body and chassis: Repair panels, door components, sill sections, and chassis fixings for a vehicle now entering its fourth and fifth decade. Galvanised and zinc-treated fasteners are available for restoration work.
Brakes: Brake pads, discs, cylinders, and brake lines for both axles. Early and late variants share most brake components, but confirm the specific axle configuration.
Electrical: Ignition components, sensors, switches, and lighting parts. V8 variants have distributor-based ignition. 300Tdi variants use a simpler system with fewer electronic components.
Quality TiersBudget Parts lists Discovery 1 parts under three quality designations.
Genuine parts are made by Land Rover or supplied through the official Jaguar Land Rover parts chain. They carry Land Rover part numbers and are manufactured to the original specification.
OEM parts are made by the original equipment manufacturer that supplied Land Rover during production. These parts are identical or near-identical in specification to Genuine parts but are sold outside the Land Rover packaging chain. Common OEM suppliers for Discovery 1 parts include Mahle (filtration and gaskets), Timken (bearings), and Delphi (fuel system components).
Aftermarket parts are produced by third-party manufacturers to fit the same application. Quality varies by supplier. Budget Parts sources aftermarket parts from established suppliers including Britpart. Aftermarket parts are appropriate for many standard service and restoration applications where cost is a factor.
All three designations are available through the quality filter on this page.
Trade BuyersBudget Parts operates a wholesale portal for workshops, independent Land Rover specialists, and parts traders. Trade account holders access preferential pricing and correct VAT documentation. If you are ordering Discovery 1 parts in volume or on behalf of a business, log in or register through the Wholesale Portal at the top of the page.
Technical GuidesThe following guides from the Budget Parts blog provide deeper technical context relevant to Discovery 1 ownership and maintenance.

Genuine Land Rover parts →The Land Rover Discovery 1 was produced from 1989 to 1998. Parts listed in this collection apply to all variants built during that production run, including early 200Tdi diesel, late 300Tdi diesel, and Rover V8 petrol variants. Discovery 2 parts (1998 to 2004) are listed separately.
The 200Tdi was used from 1989 to 1994 and the 300Tdi from 1994 to 1998. Both are 2.5 L four-cylinder diesel engines, but they use different fuel injection systems, timing covers, gasket sets, and some ancillary components. Parts are not universally interchangeable. Always confirm the engine variant before ordering engine-specific components.
Many mechanical parts are shared between the Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic because both models share the same body-on-frame platform, axle design, and LT230 transfer case. Drivetrain, suspension, and some engine parts may list fitment for both models. If a product page confirms Range Rover Classic fitment, the part will generally fit the Discovery 1 application. Always verify against your specific variant.
Genuine parts are supplied through the Land Rover parts chain and carry official Land Rover part numbers. OEM parts are made by the same manufacturers that supplied Land Rover during original production, sold outside official packaging. Aftermarket parts are produced by third-party suppliers to the same application. All three designations are available on this page and can be filtered using the Quality selector in the product grid.
Your VIN is a 17-digit code found on a plate visible through the windscreen and stamped on the chassis. The 10th character identifies the model year. Using your full VIN when contacting Budget Parts or when searching for model-specific parts ensures you receive parts matched to your exact specification.
Yes. Discovery 1 variants used either a five-speed manual gearbox or the four-speed ZF 4HP22 automatic. Gearbox-specific parts, including gaskets, seals, and selector components, are available for both. Confirm your gearbox type before ordering transmission-specific parts.
