Genuine Part
Genuine: Original manufacturer part. This product is the original part designed and produced by the vehicle manufacturer.
Cooling Fan for the engine cooling circuit, driven from the water pump pulley and drawing air through the radiator core.

The viscous coupling (fan drive) modulates fan speed with under-bonnet temperature, engaging the blades as cooling demand rises and freewheeling when it falls to reduce parasitic drag and noise. Fitted to the 4.0L and 4.6L V8 EFI petrol engine.

Supplied as a complete assembly including the viscous fan drive.
Vehicle Model Land Rover Discovery 2 1998-2004 (L318)

Frequently asked questions

What does the ERR4960LR cooling fan do?
The ERR4960LR cooling fan draws air through the radiator on the 4.0 and 4.6L V8 EFI petrol engine. Its viscous coupling speeds the fan as under-bonnet temperature rises and lets it freewheel when cooling demand falls. It's the Genuine Land Rover part, supplied complete with the viscous drive and fan.
Which V8 Land Rovers use the ERR4960LR fan?
The ERR4960LR fits the 4.0L V8 Discovery 2 and the 4.0 and 4.6L V8 EFI Range Rover P38. It's the viscous fan and drive for those petrol V8s, so confirm your car is the V8 rather than a diesel, which uses a different fan.
How do I know if the viscous fan needs replacing?
A worn V8 viscous fan typically causes overheating in traffic, a fan that spins freely when the engine is hot, or a constant roar when the coupling stays locked. On the P38 and Discovery 2 V8 this pushes up coolant temperature. Replace the assembly if the coupling no longer engages and disengages properly.
What's needed to remove the viscous fan?
Removing the ERR4960LR viscous fan typically needs a large thin fan spanner to hold the pulley while the fan nut is undone, and on many Rover V8 installations that nut is a left-hand thread. It's a fiddly job in a tight engine bay but achievable at home with the right fan-removal tools.
