Crown wheel and pinion set with a 4.1:1 final drive ratio for the front differential, long nose differential configuration.

The crown wheel and pinion form the final drive stage within the differential housing. The pinion is driven by the propshaft and turns the crown wheel, transmitting drive through 90 degrees to the differential carrier and on to the halfshafts. The ratio sets the number of pinion revolutions per turn of the crown wheel and therefore the overall gearing between gearbox output and road wheels. Front and rear differentials must run the same ratio.

Crown wheel and pinion are lapped together as a matched pair and must be fitted as a set, with pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash set on installation.

What's the difference between the long nose and short nose diff versions of this ratio?
The long nose diff (this KAM541) and the short nose Wolf diff use different pinion designs and aren't interchangeable. KAM541 is for the long nose diff fitted to Defenders, Discovery 1 and 2, and Range Rover Classic. If your vehicle uses a Wolf-type short nose diff, you need KAM549 instead at this ratio.
Do front and rear differentials need to match this ratio?
Yes, front and rear must run the same ratio to avoid drivetrain wind-up in four-wheel drive. KAM541 covers the front axle at 4.1:1; you'll need the matching KAM542 for the rear.
