Air Filter Housing - the body of the air cleaner assembly in the induction system, forming the lower half of the air cleaner box and holding the filter element between the intake inlet and the outlet duct.

It seals against the air cleaner cover to create the plenum in which the element sits, so that all air entering the engine is drawn through the filter medium rather than around it, and it carries the mounting points that locate the assembly in the engine bay. Fitted to petrol engine applications.

A cracked or distorted housing, or a damaged sealing face, allows unfiltered air past the element and can upset the metered airflow signal, producing unstable running as well as abrasive wear in the bores.
