The rear air springs carry the load and set ride height; the damper controls the rate at which the suspension compresses and rebounds, restraining axle movement over uneven surfaces and limiting body movement under braking and cornering. A distinct damper is specified for ACE-equipped vehicles, so this unit is not interchangeable with the ACE variant.
