Shear Bolt for the steering column lock, securing the column lock housing to the steering column.

The head is designed to shear off at a set torque as the bolt is tightened, leaving a smooth stub that cannot be gripped with a spanner or socket - an anti-theft measure preventing the lock assembly being unbolted from the column. Because the head is destroyed on installation, the bolt cannot be reused: fresh shear bolts are required whenever the column lock or lockset is disturbed.
