Vacuum Solenoid for the secondary air injection (SAI) system on the V8 EFI petrol engine.

The solenoid is switched by the engine control module and routes manifold vacuum through to the secondary air injection control valves. During cold running the valves are held open and the air pump delivers fresh air into the exhaust ports, raising exhaust gas temperature so the catalytic converters reach operating temperature sooner and hydrocarbon emissions fall away more quickly. Once the engine reaches temperature the solenoid de-energises, the vacuum supply is cut and the valves close.

A failed solenoid leaves the injection circuit inactive, which the engine management system logs as a secondary air injection fault.
