Coolant Expansion Tank - the header and overflow reservoir of the engine cooling circuit, mounted alongside the radiator.

The tank absorbs the volume change of the coolant as it heats and cools, separates entrained air out of the circuit and provides the system fill and level-check point. The pressure cap fitted to the tank sets the operating pressure of the cooling system.

A hairline crack in the moulding or a perished cap seal lowers system pressure and shows up as slow coolant loss, a persistent low-level warning or a coolant smell after a run. Inspect the cap, the level sensor and the hose connections whenever the tank is replaced, then refill and bleed the cooling system.
