Idler Pulley for the accessory drive belt system, mounted on the front of the engine within the auxiliary belt run.

The idler pulley drives nothing itself. It guides the ribbed accessory drive belt around the front of the engine and sets the wrap angle over the driven pulleys, keeping the belt path stable and the tension correct across the belt-driven engine accessories. The pulley turns on a sealed ball bearing pressed into its body.

Bearing wear is the usual failure mode and shows as a rumble or squeal that follows engine speed, belt edge fraying, or visible run-out at the pulley face. A seized bearing will glaze or shred the belt.

Applies to the 2.0L four-cylinder Ingenium AJ200 / AJ20 engines in both petrol and diesel form.

Inspect the drive belt and the tensioner whenever the idler is replaced, and renew them together where the belt has already been contaminated or damaged.
