Coolant Expansion Tank - the pressurised header and overflow reservoir of the engine cooling system.

The tank takes up the coolant volume displaced as the system heats and returns it on cool-down, provides the fill point and the level reference for the circuit, and acts as the high point at which entrained air separates out of the coolant. The pressure cap it carries sets the system operating pressure and with it the coolant's boiling point. The tank is common to all engine variants in this application.

Moulded tanks embrittle with heat cycling. Hairline cracking at the moulding seam and around the neck, and weeping at the hose spigots, are the usual failure modes and cannot be repaired.
