ABS Wheel Speed Sensor - front sensor for the four-wheel anti-lock braking system.

The sensor mounts in the front axle housing with its pole piece set close to the toothed exciter ring that rotates with the hub. As the teeth pass the tip they induce an alternating voltage whose frequency is proportional to wheel speed. The ABS control unit compares the signals from all four sensors and releases and reapplies brake line pressure at any wheel decelerating faster than the vehicle as a whole.

Air gap and tip cleanliness are critical. A build-up of ferrous debris on the sensor tip, a corroded mounting bore or a damaged exciter ring will produce an intermittent or low-amplitude signal, which the control unit logs as a sensor fault and which illuminates the ABS warning lamp.

Frequently asked questions

What is the STC1749A front ABS sensor?
This is the front ABS wheel speed sensor for the Defender (1987-2006) and Discovery 1 (1989-1998) four-wheel anti-lock braking system. It mounts in the front axle housing and reads the toothed exciter ring on the hub to measure wheel speed.
How many front ABS sensors are fitted?
Two front sensors are typically fitted, one at each front wheel station, on the Defender and Discovery 1 ABS system. The sensor pole piece sits close to the exciter ring and generates a signal the ABS module reads.
What are the signs of a failed front ABS sensor?
Signs include an ABS warning light or a stored wheel speed fault on the Defender or Discovery 1. A damaged tip, corrosion, or an excessive gap to the exciter ring are common causes.
