Hose Type GuideFlexible hoses connect the rigid pipework fixed to the chassis to the moving suspension and hub assembly at each corner, so they must flex and articulate through the full range of suspension travel without cracking or kinking. Rubber hoses are the standard factory fit across the full Land Rover range and are correct for normal road use. The outer rubber perishes with age and the inner lining can swell over time; a swollen or collapsed inner lining restricts return flow, acting as a one-way valve that causes a brake to drag, hold on, or pull to one side rather than release cleanly. Replace them in axle pairs to maintain balanced braking side to side.
Braided stainless hoses wrap a PTFE inner tube in a stainless steel outer braid. The braid prevents hose expansion under pedal pressure, which produces a marginally firmer and more consistent pedal feel under sustained or hard braking. The outer braid also resists abrasion from mud and debris, making braided hoses the popular choice on dedicated off-road vehicles, towing builds and anything that sees track use. End fittings and overall length must match the original specification for the model and axle in both cases.
Pipe Material GuideRigid brake pipes carry fluid along fixed runs on the chassis, bulkhead and body structure. On any Land Rover that has seen road mileage, the original steel pipe is one of the most predictable corrosion points: the outer surface rusts through from the outside, and on vehicles that have covered winter roads or muddy tracks the chassis runs on models such as Discovery 2 and Range Rover Classic are a regular failure item.
Kunifer pipe (a copper-nickel alloy, also sold as cupronickel or NiCop) is highly corrosion-resistant and needs no surface treatment. It bends by hand without kinking and produces a clean, consistent double flare with a standard flaring tool, making it noticeably easier to work with than steel on a cold workshop floor. Kunifer is fully approved for brake system use and is the default recommendation for any replacement pipe. Pre-formed pipes are listed by model and route; bulk pipe and the unions, T-pieces, brackets and clips to plumb a section or a complete system are listed separately in the collection.
Model FitmentHoses are specific to model, axle and length. Pipes are specific to their route and end fittings. Each product carries a fitment note; check it against your vehicle's model year and VIN where a cut-off is shown. On lifted vehicles, allow for extra hose length at the axle ends.

Opening any part of the hydraulic brake circuit allows air into the system. Bleed the affected circuit thoroughly before the vehicle is used on the road, working from the furthest bleed nipple from the master cylinder inward on conventional systems. On models with ABS or DSC modulators (such as Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover L322), the factory workshop procedure may specify a different bleed sequence or require a diagnostic tool to cycle the modulator solenoids; follow the vehicle-specific workshop procedure for any ABS or HCU-related work. Keep the reservoir topped up throughout and do not drive until the pedal is firm on the first press.

Replace them if they are cracked, swollen, chafed or weeping at the end fittings, or if a wheel drags or is slow to release after braking. A swollen or collapsed inner lining acts as a one-way valve, causing the affected brake to drag or refuse to release cleanly; this is a different symptom from a soft pedal, which more commonly indicates air in the system. Hoses should be replaced in axle pairs to maintain balanced braking.
Inspect the full pipe run, including the chassis underside, bulkhead and any areas behind brackets where moisture collects. Surface rust on steel pipe is normal, but pitting, flaking or swelling under surface coating indicates active corrosion that is weakening the pipe wall. Weeping at unions or joints, or a damp trace in dust or undercoating along the pipe, points to a pinhole or cracked union. Any pipe where corrosion has broken through to the bore is a replacement item, not a surface clean.
Rubber hoses are the standard fit and are correct for normal road use. Braided stainless hoses use a PTFE inner tube inside a stainless steel outer braid; they resist swelling under pressure and give a firmer pedal feel under sustained or hard braking, which suits towing, off-road and performance builds. In both cases the hose must be the correct length and end fitting for your model and axle.
Copper-nickel pipe, sold under the trade name Kunifer, is the recommended choice for any replacement pipe on a Land Rover. It is highly corrosion-resistant, which addresses the main reason original steel pipes fail, and it bends and flares without specialist tooling, making the repair more straightforward. It is fully approved for brake system use when using proper brake-grade tube. Steel pipe is appropriate only when restoring a vehicle to concours-original specification.
