Brake Vacuum Pump, the auxiliary vacuum source for the brake servo on petrol engines.

Petrol engines - particularly direct-injection and supercharged units - do not produce enough steady intake-manifold vacuum to run the brake booster on their own, so this pump supplies the vacuum the servo needs for consistent power-assisted braking. It draws down the servo chamber and maintains vacuum across varying engine load. Used on the 3.0L supercharged V6 and 5.0L V8 petrol applications.

Frequently asked questions

What does the brake Vacuum Pump do?
The Vacuum Pump is the auxiliary vacuum source for the brake servo on petrol engines. Direct-injection and supercharged petrol units don't make enough steady manifold vacuum to run the brake booster alone, so this pump supplies the vacuum the servo needs for consistent power-assisted braking.
Which Land Rovers use this brake vacuum pump?
This brake vacuum pump fits petrol engines only: the 3.0L supercharged V6 and 5.0L V8 petrol Discovery 4, Discovery 5, Range Rover L405, Range Rover Sport L494, and the New Defender L663 (2020+, 5.0 V8). It won't fit diesel models, so confirm your engine is petrol first.
What are the signs of a failing brake vacuum pump?
A failing brake vacuum pump typically shows as a hard brake pedal, longer stopping distances or reduced power assistance, and can trigger a brake warning. On these petrol Land Rovers the servo relies on this pump, so a leaking or worn unit weakens braking. Get it checked promptly if the pedal firms up.
