The spring bears down on the pad backing plates to hold them against the caliper abutments, taking up clearance so the pads cannot rattle or shift under braking and vibration. It also assists pad retraction from the disc once the brakes are released. Tension is lost through heat cycling and corrosion, so the spring is renewed with the pads rather than reused.
