Land Rover brake shoes cover three distinct systems: rear wheel drum shoes on Classic Defender models to approximately 1994 and all Freelander 1 variants; transmission handbrake shoes on the transfer box output shaft drum, which acts as the parking brake on Range Rover Classic, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover P38, and all Classic Defenders across the full production run; and drum-in-hat parking brake shoes on Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover L322, Range Rover Sport L320, and early Freelander 2.
Brake Shoe Set - Axle Set
Brake shoes are friction components that press against the inside of a rotating drum to generate braking or holding force. Across the Land Rover and Range Rover range they appear in three distinct systems, each requiring a different shoe type and specification.
Rear wheel drum shoes are the primary rear service brake on Series II and III, Series I, and all Freelander 1 variants. Early Classic Defender 90 and 110 models also used rear wheel drum shoes alongside front disc brakes, up to approximately chassis break in 1994. Series I through III run drum brakes at all four corners; the front and rear drums are different sizes and must be ordered separately.
Transmission handbrake shoes operate on a separate drum assembly mounted to the transfer box output shaft. This drum acts as the parking/handbrake mechanism on Range Rover Classic, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, and Range Rover P38. Importantly, all Classic Defenders also use a transfer box drum for the handbrake, regardless of whether the rear axle has drum or disc service brakes. The Range Rover Classic and Discovery 1 used all-round disc brakes as their primary service brakes throughout production; the only shoe they require is the transmission handbrake shoe.
Drum-in-hat parking brake shoes are a smaller, separate shoe set mounted inside the hub of a rear disc. These are used on Range Rover L322, Discovery 3, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport L320, and early Freelander 2 models. On Discovery 3, Discovery 4, and Range Rover Sport L320, these shoes are operated electronically via an EPB actuator motor.
This collection also includes brake drums, return springs, adjusters, drum screws, and mud shields, as part of the Land Rover Brake System range.

On Discovery 3, Discovery 4, and Range Rover Sport L320, the electronic parking brake actuator must be placed into service mode using a compatible diagnostic tool before the rear shoes can be retracted. Attempting to compress the actuator without activating service mode can damage the EPB actuator, cables, or parking brake system. This procedure is required every time the EPB shoes are replaced on these models.
Classic Defender (early, rear drum models): The transition from rear drums to rear discs occurred at approximately chassis number KA930455 / LA930456 in 1994. If you are unsure which your vehicle has, check the rear hub visually or use the chassis number to confirm. From the Td5 (1998) onwards, all Defenders used rear disc brakes. A transmission handbrake shoe set is still required on all Defenders regardless of rear axle brake type.
Series I through III: Front and rear drum sizes differ and must be ordered separately. Series wheel stud pattern and drum diameter vary by year, axle, and body style. Confirm the drum diameter from the old drum or your workshop manual before ordering. See the FAQ below for common Series drum part numbers.
Range Rover Classic and Discovery 1 / 2: These models use only a transmission handbrake shoe. Do not order rear wheel drum shoes for these vehicles. The transfer box drum is the sole shoe-type component required.
Freelander 2: The split between drum-in-hat and motor-on-caliper EPB occurred during the facelift production run at approximately 2012 to 2013. If your FL2 has a mechanical handbrake lever, it uses drum-in-hat shoes. If it has an EPB button and no cable-operated lever, it uses motor-on-caliper EPB and no handbrake shoes apply. Confirm by VIN before ordering.
Aftermarket brake friction components for road use in the EU should carry ECE Regulation 90 (ECE R90) approval, which confirms the friction material meets performance levels equivalent to the original equipment. Yes. Always replace brake shoes as a complete axle set. Replacing one side only causes uneven braking force, which can pull the vehicle to one side under braking or reduce parking brake holding strength. Axle sets covering both sides (for example STC2796 and STC2797 for certain Defender rear axles) are the most common format stocked. When removing the drum, also inspect the drum surface for scoring or ovality, the adjuster for wear or corrosion, and the wheel cylinder or EPB actuator seal for leaks before refitting.
Yes, this is strongly recommended. Return springs weaken over time with repeated heat cycling and worn or corroded adjusters prevent the shoes from self-adjusting correctly after bedding in, leading to a slack pedal or poor parking brake performance. Budget Parts stocks replacement springs, adjuster kits, and drum screws as individual components so the full hardware set can be replaced during a shoe job without ordering a full kit.
Common signs include a handbrake warning light on the dashboard, an EPB fault code, or reduced holding force on a slope. On these models, the electronic parking brake actuator works harder as the shoes wear down and eventually triggers a fault. EPB faults that appear to indicate actuator failure are often caused by worn handbrake shoes. Replacing the actuator without addressing worn shoes typically leads to repeat failure within a short period. Worn handbrake shoes are the first item to inspect and replace when an EPB fault is diagnosed on these models.
Series drum sizes vary by year, axle position, and body style. For Series II, IIA and III rear axles, part number 591039 is the standard rear drum. For certain LWB Series II and IIA variants, 516599 applies. Early models with 10-inch drums use 591661. Front drums for Series models with a 2.6-litre or V8 engine and large-stud pattern are 576973 and 576974. The transmission handbrake drum for Series models is listed separately as SDC100200. Always check your wheel stud pattern and drum diameter before ordering, and use the part number from the old drum or your chassis number to confirm the correct fitment.
