Rear Half Chassis - replacement rear section of the ladder-frame chassis, supplied as a pressed and welded assembly in the short-wheelbase length.

It renews the rear portion of the frame from the mid-section rearward, the area where box-section corrosion is normally worst because road spray and mud collect inside the rails. Fitting is a cut-and-weld repair: the surviving front section is cut back to sound metal, the new half chassis is aligned and clamped to the original geometry, then welded in, normally with the body lifted off for access.

What is a rear half chassis and when is it used?
A rear half chassis is a pressed and welded replacement for the rear section of the ladder frame, used when the back of the chassis has rotted beyond repair. It renews the frame from the mid section rearward on short wheelbase Series 2 and Series 3 vehicles, instead of replacing the whole chassis.
Why does the rear of a Series chassis rot first?
The rear box sections rot first because mud and road spray collect inside the rails and sit there, so corrosion works outward from the inside. Rear spring hanger areas and the join with the rear crossmember are usually worst on Series 2 and Series 3 vehicles. Light surface rust outside often hides much worse inside.
Is fitting a half chassis a home job?
Fitting a half chassis is a cut and weld repair, not a bolt on. The old section is cut back to sound metal, the new half is aligned to the original geometry, clamped and welded in, normally with the body lifted off for access. It needs welding skill, space and careful alignment, since alignment decides how the vehicle drives afterwards.
