Upper Tailgate Strut - gas-filled support strut for the upper section of the split tailgate.

The strut carries the weight of the upper tailgate as it opens, holds it in the raised position, and damps its travel on closing. Gas struts lose pressure gradually; a tailgate that drifts down, rises slowly, or has to be held open indicates the struts have weakened. The struts work as a pair and are normally replaced in pairs so that both sides support the tailgate evenly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the upper tailgate strut?
The upper tailgate strut is a gas-filled support strut for the upper section of the split tailgate on the Range Rover L405. It carries the weight of the upper tailgate as it opens, holds it raised, and damps its travel on closing.
How many struts are needed and when should they be replaced?
The struts work as a pair and are normally replaced in pairs so both sides support the tailgate evenly. Gas struts lose pressure gradually, so a tailgate that drifts down, rises slowly, or will not stay up usually means the struts have weakened.
How do I confirm this fits my L405?
This upper tailgate strut fits the Range Rover L405 from 2013 to 2022, from VIN MA442762. Use your VIN to confirm your vehicle is at or after that build point before ordering.
