It supports the column shaft in its bearings, provides the mounting points for the column switchgear and the steering lock, and couples through the intermediate shaft to the steering gear input.

Column replacement is normally required after impact damage, or where column shaft bearing wear or a damaged mounting cannot be corrected with service parts.
