Vacuum Pump Seal - sealing ring between the engine-driven vacuum pump and its mounting face on the engine, forming part of the brake servo vacuum circuit.

Direct-injection petrol engines generate too little manifold depression to feed the brake servo reliably, so a mechanically driven vacuum pump supplies it instead. This seal closes the joint between the pump body and its mounting face; once it hardens or is displaced it admits air into the circuit, which shows up as a hard brake pedal and reduced servo assistance rather than as an engine fault.

Renew the seal whenever the vacuum pump is removed or refitted. Locate it squarely in its seat on a clean, undamaged mounting face and draw the pump down evenly.
