Timing Chain Guide - LH Primary - a fixed guide in the timing drive assembly of the 2.0L four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine (AJ200 / AJ20P4), including plug-in hybrid applications.

The guide runs along the left-hand side of the primary chain, controlling the chain path between the crankshaft sprocket and the camshaft drive and damping the whip that would otherwise develop across the free span.

Its low-friction facing is a wearing surface. As the facing wears the chain gains slack, which the tensioner takes up until its travel is exhausted, giving chain rattle on start-up and, if left, timing error. Guides are normally renewed together with the chain and tensioner whenever the timing drive is disturbed.
