Knock Sensor for the engine management system, mounted on the rear face of the cylinder block. Petrol applications only - Ingenium AJ200P, AJ20P and AJ22P.

The sensor is a piezoelectric accelerometer clamped directly to the block. It detects the characteristic high-frequency vibration of detonation and feeds that signal to the engine control module, which retards ignition timing until the knock stops. This allows the engine to run close to its optimum ignition advance without risking pre-ignition damage to pistons and bearings.

A failed or incorrectly torqued sensor typically shows as a stored knock-sensor fault code, permanently retarded timing, reduced power and increased fuel consumption. Clamping torque is critical: the sensor only reads correctly when tightened to the specified figure against a clean, flat block face.
