When does the torque converter seal need replacing?

Whenever the torque converter comes out of the ZF 8-speed. A fluid leak between the engine and transmission, or fluid found on the bellhousing after removal, points to this seal. Reusing the old one after separation is a common cause of a repeat leak.

Is this a DIY job?

No. Reaching the torque converter seal means dropping the ZF 8-speed transmission out of the vehicle, which needs a transmission jack and correct support. The 8HP fluid fill also has to follow a specified temperature procedure afterwards, so it's a workshop job.
