Frequently asked questions

What is the LR180125LR torque converter seal kit?
The LR180125LR is the Genuine Land Rover seal kit for the torque converter joint on the ZF 8-speed automatic (8HP76 and 8HP51). It restores the fluid seal at the point where the converter meets the transmission front housing.
Which Land Rover models take this seal kit?
Discovery 5 L462 from 2017, Defender L663 from 2020, Range Rover L460 from 2022 and Range Rover Sport L461 from 2023, both from VIN KA000001, and Range Rover Velar from 2017. Petrol and diesel 2.0L, 3.0L and 4.4L V8 builds are covered.
Where does this seal sit in the transmission?
At the front of the ZF 8-speed automatic, sealing the torque converter hub where it enters the transmission housing. It's the barrier between transmission fluid and the bellhousing, so a failure shows as fluid appearing between the engine and gearbox.
What causes this seal to fail?
Age, heat cycling and converter hub wear are the usual causes on the ZF 8HP. Once the seal lip hardens it stops following the hub and fluid weeps out. Damage during a previous converter removal is another common cause.
Should this be replaced every time the transmission comes out?
Yes, treat it as a single-use item. Once the torque converter is separated from the ZF 8-speed the seal has been disturbed, and refitting the old one risks a leak that means dropping the transmission again. It's renewed as standard during converter or transmission work.
