Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal - the main oil seal at the flywheel end of the crankshaft, part of the crankshaft sealing arrangement on the Ingenium engine family.

The seal runs on the machined sealing land of the crankshaft rear flange and closes the gap between the crankshaft and its rear seal housing, retaining pressurised engine oil inside the crankcase and keeping it off the clutch or torque converter behind it. A hardened, worn or displaced seal shows up as an oil film at the joint between engine and transmission and, on manual applications, as clutch contamination.

Because the seal sits behind the flywheel or drive plate, access requires the transmission to be separated from the engine; it is therefore normally renewed as a matter of course whenever the gearbox or clutch is removed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the rear crankshaft oil seal do?
The rear crankshaft oil seal seals the back of the crankshaft where it exits the engine, preventing oil leaks at the flywheel end. This Genuine Land Rover seal fits Ingenium engines in models like the New Defender L663, Discovery 5, Range Rover L460 and Range Rover Sport L461.
Where is the rear crankshaft oil seal located?
The rear crankshaft oil seal sits at the rear of the engine between the crankshaft and the timing cover area, behind the flywheel. Access typically requires removing the gearbox and flywheel, so it is often replaced during clutch or transmission work.
Should the rear crankshaft seal be replaced whenever it is removed?
The rear crankshaft oil seal is typically replaced whenever the gearbox or flywheel is removed, as disturbing it can compromise the seal. Fitting a new Genuine seal during clutch or transmission work avoids an oil leak that would mean stripping the job again.
