Fitment Scope Fitment scope across the Land Rover and Range Rover range
Driveline parts in this collection span four generations of platform architecture, and the parts catalogue differs significantly between them.
Classic Land Rover (Series and Defender). Series 2, 2A and 3 use leaf-sprung solid axles with ball-and-socket swivels at the front. Propshafts run on universal joints with no CV joints in the system. Yoke series matters at the order stage: most Series and early Defender prop shafts use the 1300 yoke pattern, but later production and aftermarket replacements may use 1310. Confirm yoke series from the existing prop shaft before ordering UJ kits. Series 2 and 3 parts cover the classic mechanical driveline catalogue.
Discovery family. Discovery 1 through Discovery 4 use two-piece rear propshafts on most variants. The centre support bearing carries the shaft mid-length and is a known wear point on higher-mileage vehicles. The 2.7 TDV6 Discovery 3 (L319) and the 3.0 TDV6 Discovery 4 (also L319 chassis code but a separate generation with the 3.0 swap, not a facelift) share rear propshaft geometry on most variants but differ at the front. Confirm engine code (276DT or 306DT) before ordering front propshaft parts.
Freelander 1 and Freelander 2. Freelander 1 uses a viscous coupling unit at the rear. Freelander 2 (L359, 2006 to 2014) uses a Haldex Generation 3 coupling, which was the first application of Gen 3 ahead of Volvo and other licensees (Haldex Traction history). Haldex service parts on the FL2 are generation-specific: a Gen 4 pump or filter does not fit the Gen 3 unit. Cross-reference by part number from the existing coupling, not from the chassis code alone.
Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The L320 Sport (2005 to 2013) shares the IBF platform with the Discovery 3, so front and rear propshaft components overlap on most variants. Pre-Purchase Checks Before you order
Driveline parts are commonly mis-ordered on fitment rather than on quality. Five checks before placing an order reduce that risk to near zero.
- Single-piece vs two-piece shaft. Discovery 1, 2 and most Td5 Defenders use a two-piece rear propshaft with a centre support bearing. Series and early classic Defenders use a one-piece shaft. Confirm by visual inspection before ordering.
- UJ yoke series. Series 2/3 and early Defender prop shafts may use 1300 or 1310 yoke patterns. Measure the cap diameter and snap-ring style before ordering a UJ kit. A 1300 kit will not seat in a 1310 yoke.
- Two-piece shaft centre bearing dimensions. Centre support bearings differ between Discovery 2, Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 even where the shaft looks visually similar. Measure the bearing OD and the carrier bolt spacing.
- Haldex generation (Freelander 2 only). FL2 carries Haldex Generation 3 across the 2006 to 2014 production run. A Gen 4 pre-charge pump or oil filter ordered for a Gen 3 coupling will not fit. Verify generation from the part number stamped on the existing unit before ordering.
- Front propshaft engine code (TDV6 Discovery and Sport). 2.7 TDV6 (276DT) and 3.0 TDV6 (306DT) take different front propshaft fitment in some variants. Read the engine code from the VIN plate or block stamping before ordering front prop parts.
Workshop Tip On the Freelander 2, replace the Haldex oil and pre-charge pump filter together as a single service. Replacing the pump in old, contaminated oil is the leading cause of premature pump failure on the Gen 3 unit.
Ordering Mistakes Common driveline ordering mistakes to avoid
Four mistakes appear repeatedly in driveline part returns. None of these are repair-side mistakes; they are pre-purchase fitment mistakes.
- Ordering a generic "TD4 timing belt kit" for a Freelander 2 thinking it is driveline-adjacent. The Freelander 1 M47R "Td4 timing kit" sold by Gates, Dayco and INA is a fuel pump belt kit, not a camshaft kit, and is not driveline at all. Different engine, different system, different category.
- Ordering a Haldex service kit by chassis code alone. Chassis code identifies the model. Haldex generation is identified by part number on the coupling itself. Cross-reference both.
- Ordering a propshaft assembly without confirming flange bolt pattern. Three-bolt, four-bolt and six-bolt flanges all exist across the Land Rover range. The Discovery 1 to Discovery Series II flange conversion is a documented production update.
- Ordering CV boot kits for a Series Land Rover. Series 2/3 driveline has no CV joints. Front-axle ball-and-socket swivels with felt seals or rubber gaiters cover that location instead. CV kits in a Series listing indicate the buyer is on the wrong product.
Workshop Tip On Series 2, 2A and 3 prop shafts, the yoke pattern is the controlling dimension for UJ kit ordering. Measure the cup diameter at the existing UJ before ordering. A 1300 series UJ kit fits a yoke designed for 1300 series caps and nothing else.
System Adjacency System adjacency: parts to inspect together
Driveline replacement on a Land Rover or Range Rover usually exposes adjacent components that fail under the same operating conditions. Three pairings come up consistently in workshop practice.
- Propshaft replacement and transfer box output flange seal. Removing the propshaft for replacement gives single-job access to the transfer box output flange and seal. On any vehicle with prop shaft vibration or visible drip from the transfer flange, the seal is a near-zero-cost preventive replacement during the labour cycle.
- Driveshaft replacement and wheel hub bearing. On Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 front driveshafts, hub bearing wear and CV joint wear share a common cause: heavy vehicle weight loading the front bearing pack under steering lock. Workshops replacing the driveshaft on these models routinely inspect the hub assembly via the Discovery 4 parts catalogue.
- Freelander 2 Haldex service and rear differential output seal. The Haldex coupling sits at the nose of the rear differential. The rear diff output seals share the same access. Workshops doing a Haldex service on a Freelander 2 will normally inspect both seals during the same job.
