Frequently asked questions

What does the inhibitor switch do on a Land Rover?
The inhibitor switch stops the starter circuit from engaging unless the automatic transmission is in Park or Neutral. It reads the position of the selector shaft and only completes the start circuit in a safe gear, and it also controls the reversing light signal on many applications.
Where is the inhibitor switch fitted?
It's fitted directly to the automatic gearbox casing, on the selector shaft. Access is usually from under the vehicle or from the side of the transmission, and the switch is wired inline with the starter and reversing light circuits.
Can the inhibitor switch be replaced without removing the gearbox?
Yes, the inhibitor switch is a bolt-on component that unplugs and unbolts from the outside of the transmission casing. No gearbox removal or oil drain is typically required, though access varies by model.
