Fuel Cut-Off Switch - inertia-operated safety switch wired into the electrical supply to the fuel pump.

In normal service the switch is closed and passes current to the pump. A sufficiently severe impact or deceleration trips the internal inertia mechanism, opening the contacts and cutting the supply so that fuel delivery stops. Once tripped the switch remains open until it is reset by hand, by pressing the button on top of the body.

Corroded contacts or an intermittently open switch present as a no-start or fuel-starvation fault with the pump receiving no supply, so the switch is worth checking before condemning the pump itself.
