Coolant Temperature Sensor - engine coolant temperature sensor for the AJ-series 4.4L V8 and 4.2L supercharged V8 petrol engines.

The sensor is a thermistor exposed to engine coolant; its electrical resistance falls as coolant temperature rises. The engine control module reads this signal to set fuelling and ignition timing, control warm-up enrichment, switch the cooling fans and drive the temperature display.

A sensor that has drifted or failed can cause poor cold starting, raised fuel consumption, cooling fans running incorrectly and a stored engine management fault code.

Frequently asked questions

What does the LR000291 coolant temperature sensor do?
The coolant temperature sensor is a thermistor exposed to engine coolant on the AJ V8 petrol engines. Its resistance falls as coolant temperature rises, and the engine control module reads the signal to set fuelling and ignition timing, control warm-up enrichment and switch the cooling fans.
Where is the coolant temperature sensor fitted?
The sensor is mounted on the fuel rail on the 4.4L AJ V8 and 4.2L supercharged V8 petrol engines. It is fitted to the Discovery 3, Range Rover L322 and Range Rover Sport L320.
What are the symptoms of a faulty coolant temperature sensor?
A sensor that has drifted or failed typically causes poor cold starting, raised fuel consumption, cooling fans running incorrectly and a stored engine management fault code. Because the ECM relies on its signal for fuelling, a bad reading affects how the engine runs.
Which engines does this sensor fit?
This sensor fits the 4.4L AJ V8 petrol and 4.2L V8 supercharged petrol engines on the Discovery 3 (2005-2009), Range Rover L322 (2002-2009) and Range Rover Sport L320 (2005-2009). Check your engine variant with your VIN.
