Oil Level Sensor - electronic engine oil level sensor mounted in the wall of the sump, forming part of the engine lubrication monitoring circuit.

It measures the depth of oil standing in the pan and reports it to the engine control module, which drives the oil level readout and the low oil level warning in the instrument cluster. On engines equipped with this sensor the electronic reading takes the place of a conventional dipstick, so a failed or sludge-fouled sensor typically presents as an implausible level reading or a persistent oil level warning rather than as an actual lubrication fault.

The sensor seals against the sump face; make sure the sealing surface is clean before fitting. The vehicle must be standing level and the engine shut down long enough for the oil to drain back before a reading is taken.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LR012640 oil level sensor used for?
The LR012640 is an oil level sensor that fits in the sump (oil pan) and monitors the engine oil level, sending the reading to the vehicle electronics. It covers a range of petrol and diesel engines.
Where is the oil level sensor located?
The oil level sensor is fitted in the sump or oil pan at the bottom of the engine. It reads the oil level from there, so access is from underneath the vehicle.
How do I confirm this oil level sensor fits my vehicle?
This sensor fits a wide range including the Defender 2020+, Discovery 4 and 5, Range Rover L322 and L405, and Range Rover Sport L320 and L494, across petrol and diesel engines. Use your VIN to confirm the correct sensor for your engine.
