The pads are clamped against the rear brake disc by the caliper piston. The rear calipers incorporate the parking-brake actuator, so the piston must be wound back into its bore rather than pushed straight in when fitting new pads.

Replace as a complete axle set, check the disc faces and caliper slide pins, and allow a bedding-in period before the pads reach their full working friction level.
