Cylinder Liner forms part of the cylinder block assembly. It provides the bore in which the piston travels, giving the wear surface for the piston rings and transferring combustion heat out into the surrounding block and coolant jacket.

The liner is an insert fitted into the aluminium cylinder block. Liners are renewed when the bore is worn or scored, or where a liner has moved in the block. Liner height relative to the block deck must be measured on assembly, as it determines head gasket clamping.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LCJ000050L cylinder liner used for?
The LCJ000050L is a cylinder liner fitted into the aluminium cylinder block on the Freelander 1's 1.8 K Series or 2.5 KV6 petrol engine. It provides the bore the piston travels in, giving the wear surface for the piston rings.
When does the engine cylinder liner need replacing?
Liners are renewed when the bore is worn or scored, or where a liner has moved within the block. This typically shows up as increased oil consumption, reduced compression, or a knocking noise from the affected cylinder.
What should be checked when fitting a new cylinder liner?
Liner height relative to the block deck must be measured on assembly, as it directly affects head gasket clamping. This makes it a machine shop or specialist engine rebuild job rather than a straightforward DIY task.
