Brand Dayco
Crankshaft Damper for the TD4 2.0L four-cylinder turbo diesel engine (BMW M47).

The damper is fitted to the nose of the crankshaft and absorbs torsional vibration in the crank, protecting the crankshaft, main bearings and timing drive from resonance. It also carries the accessory drive belt pulley.

The rubber bonding between the hub and the outer ring is a wear item; a separated or wandering outer ring calls for replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What does the crankshaft damper do on the TD4 engine?
It's fitted to the nose of the crankshaft and absorbs torsional vibration, protecting the crankshaft, main bearings and timing drive from resonance. It also carries the accessory drive belt pulley on the 2.0L BMW M47 diesel.
Is the crankshaft damper the same as a crankshaft pulley?
It combines both functions. It's a vibration damper with an integrated pulley face for the accessory drive belt, rather than a plain pulley.
What tools are needed to replace this damper?
Removal needs the crank held stationary, typically with a flywheel locking tool, since the damper bolt is torqued tight on the M47 diesel. This is a workshop job rather than a driveway repair.
What are the signs the crankshaft damper needs replacing?
A separated or wandering outer ring, caused by the rubber bonding between the hub and outer ring failing, is the main symptom. This typically shows up as vibration or a wobbling pulley face when the engine runs.
Does this damper fit all Freelander 1 diesel models?
It fits the TD4 2.0L diesel (BMW M47) Freelander 1 built 2001 to 2006. Earlier Freelander 1 diesels with the Rover L-series engine use a different damper, so confirm your engine code first.
