What does the outer differential oil seal do?
The outer differential oil seal seals the differential output on the 6-speed AWF21 automatic gearbox. Fitted to the transmission's external components, it retains lubricant at the outer flange and stops leaks past the differential output on the Freelander 2 and Range Rover Evoque L538.
How do I know the differential oil seal needs replacing?
A failing outer differential seal typically leaves oil weeping or dripping from the output flange area of the AWF21 transmission. Fresh fluid on the flange or a dropping level usually points to the seal, and running low on lubricant risks differential damage.
Can this oil seal be reused?
No. The outer differential oil seal is single-use. Once removed the lip is distorted and won't seal against the flange again, so fit a new seal whenever the output flange or driveshaft is disturbed.
