Under engine management control the solenoid meters oil pressure to the camshaft phaser, advancing or retarding valve timing to suit engine speed and load. A solenoid that sticks or fails electrically leaves the phaser unable to move, which typically logs a camshaft position correlation fault and shows up as rough running, weak low-speed torque and higher fuel consumption. Its metering passages are narrow and sensitive to sludge, so oil condition has a direct bearing on service life.
