Air conditioning expansion valve - the refrigerant metering device mounted at the evaporator inlet on the heating and air conditioning housing.

It meters high-pressure liquid refrigerant into the evaporator and drops it to low pressure so that it can absorb heat from the cabin air passing over the evaporator core, regulating superheat at the evaporator outlet to match cooling demand. A restricted or seized valve shows as poor or intermittent cooling, icing of the evaporator, or abnormal system pressures.

The refrigerant must be recovered before removal, and the system evacuated and recharged after fitting.
