What happens when a belt tensioner fails?
A failing tensioner usually starts as a rattle or squeal from the front of the engine that changes with revs. As the bearing wears the pulley develops play and the belt runs off line, which chews the belt edges. On the Freelander 2 2.2 diesel a seized pulley can shred the belt outright.
Should the belt be replaced at the same time?
Renewing the drive belt with the tensioner is standard practice. Both have run the same hours, and reaching the tensioner on the Freelander 2 2.2 diesel means taking the belt off anyway, so refitting an old belt over a new pulley is false economy.
Can this be changed at home?
It's doable at home with basic tools if you can reach the front of the engine. The main obstacle on the Freelander 2 is access past the offside wheel arch, so the wheel and arch liner typically have to come out first. Note the belt routing before removing it.
