Heated exhaust gas oxygen (HEGO) sensor for the 1.8L K Series petrol engine, fitted in the exhaust system as part of the closed-loop fuel control circuit.

The sensor measures residual oxygen in the exhaust gas and returns a voltage signal to the engine control module, which trims injector pulse width to hold the air/fuel ratio at stoichiometric. An integral heater element brings the sensing tip to operating temperature quickly after a cold start, so closed-loop control is established sooner and cold-start emissions are reduced.

A lazy or failed sensor shows as poor fuel economy, rough or hunting idle, elevated emissions at test and a stored fuelling or sensor-circuit fault code.
