Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor for the engine management air intake system, mounted on the inlet manifold.

The sensor measures absolute pressure inside the inlet manifold and reports it to the engine ECU, which uses the value to calculate engine load. On multi-point injection petrol applications it provides the primary load reference for fuelling and ignition timing. On Td5 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo diesel applications it works alongside the mass air flow signal to regulate turbocharger boost and to limit smoke under load.

A contaminated or drifting sensor commonly causes erratic boost, poor throttle response, uneven idle and a stored manifold pressure fault code.

Frequently asked questions

What does the MAP sensor do?
The MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor measures pressure in the intake manifold and sends it to the ECU to calculate load and set fuelling. On Td5 Defender and Discovery 2 engines it's central to smooth running; a faulty sensor can cause poor throttle response and rough idling.
Which Land Rover models use this MAP sensor?
This MAP sensor fits the Defender Td5 (1987-2006, 2.5L I5), Discovery 2 Td5 (1998-2004, 2.5L diesel) and Freelander 1 (1996-2006) with the 1.8L K Series and 2.5 KV6 petrol auto. Land Rover part number MHK100820LA.
Where is the MAP sensor located?
The MAP sensor typically mounts on or near the intake manifold, either fed by a vacuum pipe or fitted directly, with a multi-pin electrical plug. On the Td5 it usually sits on the inlet manifold within easy reach for testing.
What are the signs the MAP sensor is failing?
Common signs of a failing MAP sensor include rough idling, hesitation under acceleration, black smoke and higher fuel use. On Td5 engines it can also trigger a fault code and limp mode. A diagnostic tool confirms whether the sensor or wiring is at fault.
