Glow Plug for the 2.0L L-Series indirect injection diesel engine, screwed into the cylinder head so that its tip projects into the pre-combustion chamber.

The glow plug is an electrically heated element that raises pre-chamber temperature before and during cranking. On a cold engine, compression alone does not lift the charge to the self-ignition temperature of diesel fuel, so the heated element supplies the additional heat that allows the injected fuel to light - the mechanism that governs cold starting.

One plug is fitted per cylinder, so four are required for a complete engine. A single failed plug usually presents as extended cranking with rough running and white exhaust smoke on a cold start, clearing as the engine warms through. Plugs are normally replaced as a set, since the remaining units will have accumulated the same service life and heat cycling.

Note: diesel applications only - this plug does not fit petrol variants.

Frequently asked questions

What is the glow plug (NCC100050L) and what does it do on the Freelander 1 diesel?
The glow plug is an electrically heated element fitted in the pre-combustion chamber of the Freelander 1's 2.0L L-Series diesel engine. It raises pre-chamber temperature before cranking so the injected diesel fuel can self-ignite on a cold engine, governing cold-start performance.
How many glow plugs does a Freelander 1 diesel need for a full replacement?
Four, one per cylinder. A single failed plug typically causes extended cranking, rough running and white smoke on cold start. They're normally replaced as a set, since the remaining plugs will have accumulated the same service hours.
What are the signs a glow plug has failed on the Freelander 1 L-Series?
Hard cold starting, rough idle and white exhaust smoke that clears as the engine warms are the typical signs. A fault code via the glow plug control unit may also be stored. Problems usually clear once the engine reaches operating temperature.
Does this glow plug fit petrol Freelander 1 variants?
No. Part NCC100050L is diesel-only, fitted to the 2.0L I4 8V TCIE Rover L-Series diesel engine in the Freelander 1 (1996-2006). It does not fit any petrol-engined Freelander 1 variant.
