Brake Shoe Return Spring Set for the rear drum brake assembly. The return springs pull the brake shoes back clear of the drum friction surface once hydraulic pressure in the wheel cylinder is released.
Spring tension is what holds a released shoe off the drum. Springs that have taken a set, or that have corroded and lost temper through repeated heat cycling, allow the linings to trail against the drum - producing binding, overheating, a drop in fuel economy and rapid lining wear.
The springs are routinely renewed whenever the shoes or wheel cylinder are replaced, since the original set will have seen the same thermal history as the linings. Fit with the drum and hub removed, and check the shoe adjuster and wheel cylinder for free movement at the same time.
